The Egyptian Market in Istanbul is considered one of the most important tourist attractions in the city. The market offers a diverse range of commercial shops and traditional bazaars that sell various goods and products, such as jewelry, fabrics, art pieces, handicrafts, spices, traditional food products, perfumes, incense, and many other items.
In the heart of historic Istanbul, amidst the aromas of spices and the vibrant colors of diverse goods, stands proudly the Egyptian Market, a living witness to the grandeur of history and ancient civilizations that have passed through this enchanting city.
Located in Eminönü, at the heart of Istanbul, historical records tell us that the site of the Egyptian Market today was once occupied by a market known as “Marco Polo’s” during the Byzantine era, where basic necessities of that time were sold.
Over the centuries, specifically in the year 1660, the Egyptian Market underwent a significant transformation, becoming part of the complex of the New Mosque, located close to its current site.
The construction of this venerable market was commissioned by the architect Kazım Ağa, at the behest of Hürrem Khanum, the mother of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV. The market was distinguished by its unique architectural design, featuring a vaulted ceiling that skillfully combined various architectural styles prevalent at that time.
The name “Egyptian Market” was not given arbitrarily; rather, it stems from the fact that its construction costs were funded from taxes collected in Egypt. The purpose behind its establishment was to cover the expenses associated with the adjacent new mosque. Initially, the market was known as the “New Market,” named after the nearby mosque. It primarily sold imported spices from India, such as coffee and herbs, in its early days.
Over time, the scope of trade in the market expanded to include various types of goods, ranging from handicrafts, antiques, and souvenir gifts to carpets, clothing, and jewelry.
Today, the Egyptian Market remains a preferred destination for shopping and history enthusiasts from around the world, offering them a unique experience enriched with history, culture, and diversity.
